Sally Varah DL

Sally was introduced to KeepOut in 1998 – soon after it launched as the Coldingley Crime Diversion Scheme – by her late husband, Michael Varah. As Chief Probation Officer in Surrey, Michael had recognised and applauded the very real benefits that the scheme afforded to both prisoners and young people at risk. Taking over his nomination as High Sheriff of Surrey in 2008-2009, Sally visited KeepOut workshops in both HMP Coldingley and HMP Send and became an advocate for this unique crime diversion scheme during her Shrieval year.

In 2010 she was privileged to join the Board of Trustees where she chairs the communications and marketing sub-group. She applauds the way in which the KeepOut prisoner teams are constantly seeking inspired ways to face young people with what prison means and the consequences of their actions – and how the scheme enables and empowers individuals to make life-changing choices.
