KeepOut at HMP Send

KeepOut has offered workshops for young women at HMP Send since September 2008. These professionally developed programmes are aimed at young people who are already engaged in a programme of intervention or prevention. Each week, the KeepOut team provides young people with information to make informed choices not to offend.

We run low and medium risk programmes

The first meeting to discuss establishing the scheme within this closed female training prison in Surrey was held in July 2007. Since then, over 30 women prisoners have worked with the KeepOut team in the first two years of operation. After their release from prison, several of them have gone on to join organisations that provide services for young people in the community. Those who have been involved in the scheme are not known to have re-offended.

KeepOut provides a work-based location for to up to seven female prisoners at any one time. In addition, core training is designed to equip the prisoner team with the skills and

competencies necessary to work with very challenging young people in a safe and professional manner.

We are currently looking to expand the portfolio of programmes we offer. In 2010, we piloted a four-week extended programme on managing anger. Other alternative programmes are being designed to meet the needs of low, medium and high risk young women.

This is what was achieved with young people and prisoners by KeepOut at HMP Send in 2009-2010:

• 372 females attended KeepOut events

49 different groups participated in the programme

9 adult showcases were facilitated by the prisoner team

2 staff training events raised awareness for prison officers

3 female prisoners achieved full NVQ Level 3 Advice and Guidance
